My 5 Gateway Fandoms

My “List of the Week” segment is being transformed so I can participate in The Nerdy Girlie and SuperSpaceChick’s new community building project, 5 Fandom Friday – although I’ll be posting mine on Thursdays since I already have a Friday segment. This week’s topic is the 5 Fandoms that were your gateway into geekdom. Here are my picks (in no particular order):

FINAL FANTASY X

Final Fantasy X was my first “real” video game. I bought it with my Christmas money when I was 12 after getting a PS2 that year from my parents. I instantly fell in love with it and it remains my favorite video game to this day. It introduced me to the wide world of video games and led me to playing other RPGs and eventually into exploring other genres, like first person shooters and puzzle games.

HARRY POTTER

More specifically, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, because it wasn’t until I saw the movie adaptation that I really fell in love with the series and decided to read the books. Now it’s one of my absolute favorite fandoms and introduced me to the wonderful world of YA Fiction.

STAR WARS

My mom is a huge Star Wars fangirl so I grew up watching The Original Trilogy and I had (and still have – lets be honest) the hugest crush on Luke Skywalker. Seriously, I was dead set on marrying him when I was like five years old. The movies, the books, the games – I love it all. My admiration and fascination with science fiction definitely started with this fandom.

TEEN TITANS

I never really cared much for super heroes or comics before Teen Titans (the animated series) came along. I’ve always had a soft spot for sidekicks so this show quickly won me over in my early teen years. After its cancelation, a void was left in my heart, so I pursued other super hero cartoons like Justice League, Batman Beyond, and Young Justice. Without Teen Titans I might never have gotten into super heroes (specifically DC) as much as I am now.

FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST

I’ve always loved Fullmetal Alchemist. I wouldn’t say it’s exactly a “gateway fandom” for me, since I never really got into anime as a whole, but it did lead me to watching a few other shows. FLCL and Case Closed (weird combo, I know) are two I can remember watching a lot of when I was younger.

This was a fun topic to write about and it made me all nostalgic since I got into most of these fandoms in my preteen and early teen years. I’m excited to see who all is participating in this new segment and to read about other geek girl’s gateway fandoms. Leave a link in the comments if you decide to play along!
