If the World Ended Today, Would You…

Lifes Been Good to Me So Far ~ Joe Walsh

The one thing I’ve reflected on during my period of isolation this holiday season was the sameness of the days. Our life ultimately goes by in the blink of an eye, but have you noticed quite often we live the same year over and over? At this point in my life I feel like I’ve lived this one for thirty odd years or so. We as humans are the consummate recyclers. Everyone wants to become a better person, but some people just don’t know how. So this holiday I set out to at least pencil in an outline of how to create new and real sustainable growth for me in the upcoming year.

At the end of each day, I would reflect and try to see what I can do to become a better person. Why would I bother? Because one of my lifelong goals has been a deep seeded desire to leave an imprint on my space in the world, the kind that people would pause and say, yeah, I liked her she did kind, great, helpful (insert adjective here) things. By setting aside some time each day to reflect on what behaviors were good and bad, I have had the opportunity to grow. Am I done growing yet? Judging by the last few days, no I think not. Do the last few days matter in my life’s “work”, no, not much at all. I still stand by, I made the judgment that felt right to me, some people agree I did the right thing, others on the other side think not. But then, lines in the sand are meant to be divisive things and I do believe this one not only crossed, it was smeared at the same time. I stand with the thought that to rise above mediocrity I must always remember, “you become who you associate with,” and I feel my association is better a little further to the North than the South. Or like a song says, I’m on “the wrong side of heaven but on the righteous side of hell.” I refuse to not matter, I am important, if only to me, so, in fact, are you. I choose to serve those who need serving, help as many people as possible, stand for the little guy when it is right, and shift my sights from the ordinary to the extraordinary because awe-inspiring habits yield miraculous results. That’s what I am hoping anyway. Either that or something else, the year is still young, I may still have a little recycling to do.
