Guest Post and Giveaway from Author Megan Squires

Today I have the pleasure of welcoming Megan Squires to the blog. Megan is the author of Demanding Ransom, a contemporary New Adult book that was recently released. She was kind enough to write some thoughts about why she decided to make the jump from YA to NA for this book and after her post, I have a tour-wide giveaway for five ebook copies of Demanding Ransom. Below that, I’ve got my review – so there’s a trifecta of awesomeness, right? I’ll let Megan take it away!

Within just the past year or so, the phrase New Adult has become a household term (among writers and readers, at least). I’ve written two distinct young adult works so far, but I knew with Demanding Ransom I wanted to branch into that new adult territory.

Depending on who you ask, new adult can mean many things. It typically includes college-aged characters and chronicles the many things that happen during that time in their lives. Because of this, often the content is more mature, both in theme and in relationships. I think where it branches into adult territory is in how graphic you choose to make those two things.

Demanding Ransom does deal with heavier subject matter than my previous novels. Sex, pregnancy, death, illness–it touches on an array of themes that older characters can face. However, I chose not to take the storyline to the explicit level. While it works for many books and their specific characters, I wanted to keep the themes of forgiveness and personal growth at the forefront. Don’t get me wrong, there is tons of sexual tension here and it’s probably my favorite part of the book. But I really wanted to focus on falling in love with Ran character, just as much as the fact that he’s this ridiculously good looking guy, too. I think the way it’s written and the way Maggie and Ran’s relationship progresses keeps it at that college level.

As both a writer and a reader, I love the anticipation just as much as the actual act, from hand-holding to physical sex. For me it’s all about the build up. And there’s a lot of build up here. The chase is just as much a part of the story as the actual realization of the relationship in Demanding Ransom. Coming of age, college-romance has quickly become my favorite new genre and I hope to write many more that fall into this category.
