3 Ways to Use the New Kat Von D Lock-It Featherweight Primer

Kat Von D’s makeup line has proven itself time and time again to be so much more than just a celebrity spin-off. It’s clear that in all she does, she does with 110%—from each tattoo to every product formulation. This Spring, in addition to a few highly sought-after products (including her Shade Light Contour Palette), she has launched the Kat Von D Lock-It Featherweight Primer ($32), possibly one of the best primers I’ve ever used.

Formulated with everything you want (vitamins, aloe vera, nourishing jojoba and shea) without all the stuff you don’t (fragrance, color and heavy silicones), this primer feels like nothing but makes a huge difference. Plus—it’s quite multi-functional too! A few weeks ago, I sat down with Kat Von D’s Global Makeup Artist, Erik Soto, to discuss some tips and tricks on how to use this primer. So—here we go!

1. Under Foundation

No surprise here. Everyone knows that primer goes under foundation to prep skin with moisture, smooth out texture and create a protective barrier that helps lock down foundation for extended wear. Well, this primer sure does that well. It’s scentless, colourless and feels weightless on the skin (almost like an ultra-light moisturizer) and I found it kept my foundation looking great all day. Okay, now move along to more innovative ways on how to use it.

2. Mixed Into Foundation

Betcha didn’t know about this one? Erik mentioned that the formula is specially designed to work with Kat Von D’s iconic Lock-It Tattoo Foundation. So much so, that he actually recommended mixing it in with the foundation to help sheer it out and make it a little easier to apply (because that foundation is FULL coverage). I’ve been using this trick for the past few weeks and I love it. I haven’t tried mixing it with any other foundations, but I’m sure one could experiment keeping in mind this is a water-based formula.

3. Over Foundation

Typically, we wouldn’t suggest putting primer on top of makeup—but this formula is great for refreshing and reviving your complexion. Because it’s a liquid-y, water-based formula, it sinks into the skin well and delivers great hydration. Similar to how you would use a setting spray or spray toner throughout the day to freshen up, you could pump a bit into your hands, rub them together to thinly distribute the product, then pat your moistened hands all over your face. BAM—instant pick-me-up.
