Going Back to Basics With Urban Decay Naked Basics Eye Palette
Ahhh… how much more of the “nakedness” can we take? It seems that the neutral makeup trend is not going to stop anytime soon so I might as well just run with it. I am a huge fan of Urban Decay’s Naked eye makeup range and I naturally had to pick up the Basics palette as well.
The palette consists of simple, matte and rather basic eyeshadows. There’s nothing particularly exciting about the shades but I find them to be very useful because these mattes can act as very good crease colours or to tone down a frosty or highly metallic eyeshadow.
- Venus > off-white, slightly matte finish
- Foxy > light eggshell with yellow undertones, matte finish
- W.O.S. (Walk of Shame) > light peach-pink, matte finish
- Naked 2 > taupe with rose undertones, matte finish
- Faint > medium brown with warm undertones, matte finish
- Crave > dark brown (almost black), matte finish
All the shadows apply smoothly with minimal fallout. I do get a bit of dust with Crave but just have to tap the excess off each time. The texture of the shadows feels creamy and the powder itself is finely-milled. They are very pigmented too so I tend to use the darker shades quite lightly unless I’m going all-out for a smokey look.
These matte shadows pair very nicely with a lot of the shimmery shadows and they compliment the Naked eye palettes, be it 1, 2 or 3, well. I like using the Basics palette on its own too when I want a matte eye look. I tend to use Crave as a smudged-out liner and not as a main lid colour unless I layer a shimmery shadow on top. From the photo, I’ve demonstrated how useful this deep, dark colour can be and the different types of effect you can get by using it on its own or layered.
I also like that it comes in a small, portable palette. The packaging is simple and minimal, and just like its namesake… it’s rather basic. It has a good sized mirror despite its compact proportions. Each shadow is approximately 1.5g (0.05oz), which is actually the same as a full size individual shadow. So it’s quite impressive considering they managed to squeeze in six full-sized shades into such a small palette.
I’d recommend this palette if you’re looking for some good neutral, matte shades to add to your stash or to compliment existing shimmery/glittery eyeshadows. I do find the Basics palette to be quite a versatile lil’ thing and am pretty happy with my purchase. Each Urban Decay Basics eye palette retails at RM98, which brings the cost of each eyeshadow to around RM16.30, and well, it’s a lot cheaper than buying individual MAC pans.
