DIY Faux Concrete Planters

I’ve been on this weird plant kick lately. Like really weird. The voice of my black thumb has been completely suppressed along with the voices of all the fallen plants I’ve left in my wake. That part sounds bad, but I think I’m in the process of turning the corner and I’ve slowly start to notice just how long I’ve managed to keep some of them alive. One plant is almost a year old…that’s like a Hollywood marriage lasting 10 years by my standards.

I picked up a few succulents at a local farmers market last weekend which finally gave me an excuse to try making faux concrete planters that I’ve had on my mind.

I’ve had this planter for awhile and had even primed it to to paint but never did anything with it…I’m on top my projects if you can’t tell ;). Anyway, I’m glad I never got around to it because it’s the perfect simple shape to try a faux concrete look on. I think anything to elaborate wouldn’t feel like concrete and I like the smooth lines of this planter.

The Valspar Stone finish spray paint is what I used to get the faux concrete effect. It’s about double the price of normal spray paint at $10 a can but I have a few other projects I could see myself using this on. This stuff is also really fun to use. Each color is made up of flecks of multiple colors that come out like color (non-metallic) glitter. It’s kind of cool to see how the color builds and develops as you spray this on the planter. One thing to note is that the drying time is quite a bit longer than your average spray paint so just be aware. I sprayed the planter down in our garage with the door open and after an hour it was still rather wet. I ended up carefully moving it outside into the sun for two hours and it was still a little tacky when I brought it in.

Succulents need a soil that will drain quickly so we picked up this Miracle Grow bag that was recommended by the guy that sold us the succulents. The bag recommends filling your pot up 1/3 the way full but mine was a bit deep so I had to add quite a bit more. If I would have thought about it while I was out I would have grabbed some some rocks or stones to add to the bottom of the planter.

I know succulents are a very popular plant right now but I just think they are so cute! It’s something about their small miniature size and hardiness that makes me happy. This could even make a great Mother’s Day gift if you’re on a budget and have a momma that loves live plants!
