Kung Fu Jungle (2014) (English)

A martial arts master who is in prison must help the police when other skilled martial arts masters is killed by a mysterious person.

Kung Fu Jungle was another film that seemed interesting on paper, but having seen the film I sat disappointed again in the chair, I think I soon gotta get me a new chair, for it has experienced many disappointments.

The problem with Kung Fu Jungle is that it is too modern, it becomes too Chinese. Now it has been some years since Donnie Yen last starred in a good film, I think he can now put his career on the shelf because I do not feel that he has more to give as a martial artist in front of the camera. Work behind the camera, Donnie!

The script is as usual written by kindergarten children, there is nothing new when it comes to modern Chinese films that are out to entertain simple people. There is nothing that impress here, the action choreography is not exciting or innovative, the characters are ridiculous and stupid and as a viewer you unfortunately do not care about the characters we follow at all when they have no depth.

And what is it with these police women who is constantly popping up in Chinese films? Is there any gender quotas in China that I do not know about? They are useless, the actors who play these characters are entirely without charisma. Of course you will find such a woman in Kung Fu Jungle too, can not these women just stay in bed or in the kitchen? Is it so difficult for these women to understand their role in society?

The last major battle sequence is ridiculous to look at. The protagonist and his antagonist is fighting in the middle of a busy road where none of motorists stops. They just drive past them and honks their horns, nobody cares that there are two men that are killing each other. What is it with these strange Chinese who certainly eat anything they come across? It’s no wonder that not so many like them.

No, Kung Fu Jungle is not a good martial arts film. It does not smell much Hong Kong over the film, it smells red devils all the way here to Norway! Bad Chinese, bad!

4/10
