Rise of the Legend (2014) (English)

We follow a young Wong Fei Hung. He is a member of a triad group, the most powerful triad group in town. But he has his own agenda, he is out to destroy this group and he has a plan.

The best thing about Rise of the Legend, is to follow a younger Wong Fei Hung. But as a whole, this film was a big and boring disappointment.

The problem with the film is the story that in the end becomes boring. Rise of the Legend feels so generic if you have seen modern martial arts films from China the last 10 years. As many of the other films in this genre, the characters lacks charisma and interesting personality. They are so bland and uninteresting, I had a hard time watching the TV screen because my eyes began to look away from the screen. That is not a sign of quality.

The fight sequences are okay, but nothing more than that. You know what you will get when Corey Yuen is the fight choreographer, that means close ups, fast editing and some visually good looking scenes. He has his own style, but he won’t be remembered as one of the best fight choreographers in history.

Why is it so hard for the Chinese these days to create interesting characters with a lot of personality? When the running time is over two hours, the film needs to have characters that the viewers find interesting. But what you get is a bunch of characters and actors that doesn’t have anything to offer the film. As I said before, it is so generic and tedious.
