Dear New York, It’s a Date

I love this city, I hate it sometimes, too. In an effort to keep track of my feelings about the Big Apple during my time here I try my best to chronicle them in a letter to this crazy place. Welcome to Dear New York–a series posted monthly on the anniversary of the date I moved here.

Hi.

My whole life I feel like I’ve been waiting on being here with you. The last four years, especially. And now I’m here.

I don’t know if you noticed but I redid the blog. Just for you.

I didn’t feel like the website served me anymore. Or gave insight into my growth as a person. I’ve always been a personal style blogger with an emphasis on the person.

I know that I’ve always personified you, New York. And always felt protective of you, too. Especially when people talk about how high your rent is, how crowded you can be, or how mean the people are (living in New York City has determined that was a lie).

They may be right.

But mostly, they just sound like the kind of people who talk bad about a person who wouldn’t give them their number. You know what I mean. Oh, I didn’t like him, anyway. He had ashy ankles (or whatever).

Yeah, sure, it’s hard. I’ve been guilty of saying bad things about you, too. But only when it looks like you might be reject me for someone who’s prettier, smarter, richer, who happens to be a better writer.

I promise not to do that anymore. To be upfront with my feelings. I know you’re difficult, New York. But you’re worth the struggle. You’re worth the hassle. And I promise to defend you to everyone within earshot.

If you’ll have me.

Because I want you. Let’s do this right. Me and you, New York. On a real date.

Coincidently, that’s what’s happening in the video that replaced my header. I’m obsessively staring at the city I love (the kind of love that stares at you while you’re sleeping, that tries to sneak and smell your hair on a street corner), plotting my attack. Readying for our date (with destiny–too corny, or nah?).

“You gotta think bigger,” Rob, my videographer said when we shot this. “You need to approach everything you do with that in mind form here on out.”

“Look at the skyline,” he yelled. “You see that? It’s yours. Good! Now turn! And smile at me!”

New York, I don’t want to be too presumptuous, but I think we may have something special.

I think… you’re going to love me.

It’s a date.

p.s. Thank you for being patient with me while I redesigned the site. I got the urge one day, and I was like, why not?! What do you think? Is there anything I should change? Also, thanks to Kamille and Yasmein for listening to me obsess. And watching the video over and over.
