Magazine of the month: Lula

New month, new magazine! Of course, some of our favourite titles are ELLE, Harper’s, Vogue – and all those big and beautiful heavyweights that we’ve come to know and love throughout the years. But besides those classics, there are countless (really – it’s difficult to keep track) smaller magazines popping up that are worth devouring. In the reoccurring section ‘Magazine of the Month’, we’re highlighting a special title that you might not otherwise have come across. Today, the spotlight is on Lula.

It’s one of Yara’s personal favourites because (as she’s quoting right now); it’s about smart fashionable girls that dream and do. It has such a specific signature and it sets a tone of smart girls that like to explore and think and dress for themselves.

Here are three reasons why this month’s Lula is worth picking up ASAP.

1. An interview with Yumiko Ustsu
This Japanese artist and photographer creates otherworldly dreamscapes using unlikely, perishable materials – fruits, vegetables, seafood, insects and animals. One of her artworks consists of a pineapple placed upside down, with little eyes in the squares so that they look like tiny little owls. When you describe it, it just sounds weird, when you look at it, it’s surprisingly cute (and still a little weird).

2. An editorial called Metamorphosis
In Metamorphosis you see the breathtakingly pretty Antonina and Gabriele model some very modern looking Twiggy-like clothes, with lots of paisley prints, embroidery and eye make up that seem to have escaped from a psychedelic party in the seventies. Lula dives into Miuccia Prada’s psychedelic landscape of Victor Moscoso-esque prints and does so with lots of flair.

3. An insightful interview (and gorgeous editorial) with Tavi Gevinson
Tavi Gevinson launched her blog Style Rookie at the age of eleven and has developed as a master of all trades. This young polymath is now an actress making her debut on Broadway, but is also a writer, editor and fashion journalist. In this interview, she oozes girl power and manages to look unbelievably pretty and cute at the same time.
