Arriving in Lanyu / Orchid Island / 蘭嶼.

Lanyu (蘭嶼), which translates literally into Orchid Island, is a high island off the southeastern coast of Taiwan and home to the Tao (達悟族), a group of Taiwanese aboriginal people. You’ll spot a lot of colors, motifs and art that are distinctive to the aboriginals in some of my photographs taken in Lanyu.

We had planned a very short getaway and to save time we chose to travel by air. It was a 15-minute flight from Taitung Airport in what I would call the smallest airplane ever (it sits 19) and our hearts were in our throats the whole damn time.

Despite my general disdain for airplanes, Lanyu is so beautiful that I never had the time to worry about our impending plane ride back, not even once, while we were there. We rode on the scooter our guesthouse owner rented to us (unfortunately not the one pictured below) and rode round and round the island, discovering something new to stop for every so often.
