This DIY is a modern twist on Japanese string gardens known as Kokedamas. I love the contrast of the thin string with the hanging plant, and the natural wooden blocks and beads on the string make it even more beautiful. What a great way to add some life to your home or office…
Materials:
• Hellebore
• Orchid
• Rhipsalis Capilliformis
• Sheet Moss
• Peat Moss
• Akedama (clay bonsai soil)
• Waxed Cotton String
• Round Wood Beads
• Square Wood Blocks
Tools:
• Drill
• Drill bit
• Embroidery needle
• Scissors
• Gloves
• Water Bucket
• Bowl
How-To:
• First, drill holes in the blocks and set them aside.
• Next, soak your sheet moss in water for 5-10 minutes. Set aside while you prep the plant.
• Take your plant of choice and gently remove the soil, exposing the roots.
• Cut long pieces of string and lay them across each other in the bowl. The strings should be long enough to tie around around the root ball.
• Lay the soaked sheet moss inside the bowl on top of the string.
• Next, lay down a thin layer of peat moss on top of the sheet moss
• Make a soil mixture of 70% peat moss, 30% akedama.
• Using this mixture, form a ball around the roots of your plant.

• Lay the root ball in the bowl on top of the peat moss layer and tie the strings around the root ball.
• When all of the strings are tied, the root ball should be covered completely in sheet moss.
• For additional support take more string and wrap it multiple times around the root ball.
• Now it is time to hang your plant and string your wood beads and blocks. So, lay out the pattern of beads and blocks you would like
• Take two pieces of string and tie the ends to each side of the root ball.
• Hold the plant up by those strings and tie a longer piece of string where the plant is balanced.
• Use the needle to help thread the blocks and beads on the long piece of string.
