Napoli Nel Cuore, amazingly good pizza on Bourke Street, Redfern

I love pizza. Like I really love pizza. I have dreams of moving to Italy for 3 months and getting fat off the stuff (sorry, boyfriend). Fortunately for my place of employment, boyfriend and maybe waistline a pizza place has opened down the road forgoing my immediate need to move to Italy Eat Pray Love style.

Piccantina pizza – tomato base, mozzarella and spicy salami.

Tagliatelle – not bad but pizzas are the winners here.

My BYO wine for the night: Margan frizzante from the Hunter Valley.

Napoli Nel Cuore makes the pizza with my favourite base in Sydney (so far). It’s like the pizza I had in Italy – soft, chewy and fluffy. If I dreamed of pizza, this would be the base I dream of. I don’t know how

Fabio (the owner with the best name) does it. The toppings are simple with classic pizzas like margherita (although I do wish they used fresh mozzarella), capricciosa and zia (that comes with prosciutto and rocket). There’s also the mysterious sounding Fabio’s special which changes every day… I admit, I am intrigued. Next time, perhaps.

The specials.

3 little arancini balls – crispy on the ouside, gooey on the inside.

Carb loading for no reason.

For starters we had the arancini which was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft and cheesy on the inside. It was on the specials but I hope it makes a regular appearance in my life. We tried the tagliatelle which was a bit of a let down. My advice, skip the pastas and go straight for the pizzas.

Oh, and they do pizzas by the metre here. BY THE METRE!!! That’s my next cold and rainy Saturday night sorted. If only they delivered…

Making the nutella pizza – so much nutella!

Outdoor seating – there’s also a little courtyard out back.

They have a cute little outdoor area that could do with some music or something to help avoid those awkward moments when the whole area goes silent. Inside the lights are so bright it’s kind of like you’re eating in a kebab shop (less harsh lighting would work wonders), so definitely try to get an outdoor seat if you can.

I love this place and have firm plans to make friends with Fabio so that I can get bonus pizza and/or prosciutto. (I kid! Sort of.) But seriously, this place is excellent even if it’s a little rough around the edges because that’s the way I like it. Fabio, I’ll be back!

Speaking of all things Italian…

A little bit of Italy in Broke.

Located in the Broke Fordwich Wine Region in the Hunter Valley and now in its 8th year, what started as a lavish Italian dinner at a local home has turned into a wonderful weekend long festival celebrating good Italian food and wine. Now that’s my kind of festival!

There’s wine tasting from the region’s top 12 wine producers, a huge variety of wood-fired pizzas, cheeses, olive oil, gelatos and fresh local produce. I was lucky enough to receive a bottle of frizzante from Margan (one of the wine producers) and it was good stuff! Lightly sparkling and a little sweet it was a refreshing match with my pizzas and one to sample if you’re in the Hunter.

A highlight of the weekend are the dinners at 3 of Broke’s award winning venues – Margan Restaurant, Catherine Vale Wines and Nightingale Restaurant (but you better reserve those quickly because they always book out).

Check out the weekend packages here, they look amazing (2 nights accommodation, festival entry, lunch and dinner vouchers, hampers, wines and a bus to drive your potentially wined up self around).

Buon appetitio!
