L’Oreal Preference Mousse re-usable hair dye review

Finally, a re-usable hair dye solving the age-old problem of roots between colourings. As soon I watched the L’Oreal Preference multi-use permanent hair dye I just HAD to invest. Believe it not, my hair is naturally a really light fair colour with blonde highlights, but I’ve been dying my hair dark since I was at school because I just feel it suits me more than my natural colour.

I’ll be the first to admit, I was slightly disappointed at first with this product. There’s no doubt it looks the part, but as soon as I started (you take the plastic head off and replace with the dispenser head), I immediately sprayed it into my hair by mistake by putting a little pressure on the new lid when clipping it into place (point and laugh, point and laugh…). The mousse came out fine, but didn’t feel half as smooth as my usual John Frieda mousse hair dye. My main disappointment however came when my nose smelt the stench – wow. I felt like I had gone back in time to when hair colour burnt your eyes they were so potent and the smell, well, lets just say I didn’t set a stink bomb off, but I wouldn’t of blamed anyone for thinking I had!

After opening my window to save myself from choking I was worried about how well (or not so well) the mousse had actually spread and how the colour would turn out– but finally the product finally started to re-deem itself. The conditioner smells gorgeous (a welcome change from the eu de stink bomb) and the coverage and overall colour was great – top marks for end result. Beware though I’m not afraid of a slightly unnatural look, the colour went on almost too well and I think it will take a good few washes to make it look anything like a natural colour.

I then had to wash the inevitably dirty bottle with some warm water ready for my root top up in a few weeks. The only problem is, I have no idea how much is left in the bottle, I’ve got my toes and fingers crossed that it’ll be enough. Overall, this product had some really good, but really bad points too. I got the hair dye on offer and I won’t be paying full price for it anytime soon. Now I’m just hoping John Frieda will bring out something similar that doesn’t smell so bad when it’s applied to your hair.
