The Power Of Positive

Every now and then you’ll stumble across a book or a film that will change your life – or at least your outlook on life, and just that happened to me. Now I don’t want to sound like one of these stereotypical sellers, because a book or film can’t change everything can it? But what if it changed your views, your confidence and general being…

I was first introduced to The Secret by my dad. The Secret is a film which is easily laughable at. Sometimes our up tight English ways makes it hard for us to take over enthusiastic Americans seriously, none the less, the film is about positive thinking. It’s about how you can achieve what ever it is you dream about and desire- but the trick is you have to break the moulds that society today places on people today. Say your earning 12k a year, maybe the prospect of earning 25k is a huge step up that you can’t achieve, either because you don’t have the skills, won’t find the work, or don’t believe your worth that yet. You are.

So I watched The Secret and found it inspiring, I felt confident and powerful. But then I forgot all about it after a few months. Years passed, and a friend mentioned it at work years later. That night as soon as I got home I put it on. It’s a funny old film, one i’ve both fallen asleep watching and also balled my eyeballs out to.

When I rediscovered the film, I was in a part time retail job I really wasn’t happy with and I had to get out sooner rather than later. It got to the point I couldn’t take it anymore, I needed to keep pushing my career and having just left university I decided to take a big risk. I booked a holiday which I wasn’t allowed off for 2 months time, I would have to hand my notice in either way. Wreckless? It was a part time role and luckily it wasn’t an eat or be eaten situation, but non the less, I felt so positively and strongly about me moving on and not getting stuck in the retail trap after university, that I knew I’d make something work. I had been doing work experience for a few months, working 6 days a week for 3 months, and then I got the news – I had secured a job doing something I loved. I handed my notice in early.

So this may just be coincidence, nothing amazing here. But what is amazing is how positive it all became. I believe a humans will power is one of the most powerful forces on earth, what you believe, you become. If you don’t like something, or feel like you need to move on – stop talking about it, feel great, feel positive and make it happen.

So following on from the film, the book ‘The Magic’ ended up on my lap, a sequel to The Secret. This probably caused the most significant difference to how I think and feel. The Magic is all about gratitude, for things you never even think about, things you take for granted on a day to day basis. For example, you can’t focus on the negative in any situation – picture this, your stuck on a packed out tram or bus and your patience is running out with people in general. Stop. The Secret teaches you to be greatful no matter what situration you’re in – you’r on a bus on your way to your safe warm home, you aren’t walking, be thankful for the driver who is even making this possible – say thanks. Your friends and family, be great full for their happiness and health. If a family member or friend is sick, be thankful for their full recovery.

So, whilst I could babble for hours (now that would be an essay!) I thought I’d share the film and book that have changed my life. I’m not saying everything is now roses, but feeling empowered and worthy is a beautiful feeling. Since watching The Secret, it’ll pop up in strange places. It’s a celebrity favourite, even Essex’s own Gemma Colin’s mentioned it during an episode of TOWIE, and the gorgeuos Michelle Keegan is a fan and re-tweets some quotes from The Secret. If you don’t like something, change it. When your in the old folks home, you’ll look back on the day you decided to do something you love, and changed your life completely – not the one that you didn’t, no matter what the outcome.

Has the power of positive thinking changed your life?
