Rosie the Reviewer {The Book Thief}

The Book Thief

5 ***** Synopsis: While subjected to the horrors of World War II Germany, young Liesel finds solace by stealing books and sharing them with others. In the basement of her home, a Jewish refugee is being sheltered by her adoptive parents.

My Thoughts: I was looking forward to seeing this before I even knew the plot. My sister had read the book a few times, but found it difficult to read. This lead me with reservations as to whether the adaptation would be a failure. Though since I kept from any spoilers, except for the part that death is actually a character and that really isn't much of a spoiler, as well as reviews so I could go into this without any expectations.
My first feeling about the movie was wow, they have German accents, how refreshing. Usually they choose the universal accent, a British one, instead of the country of origin. I love a German accent, so this is something that helped win me over.

The second was the wonderful little girl Liesel who had a passion for the written word and shared that love with her adopted Papa. Next had to be the relationship between Liesel and Max, a German-Jew, who were the sweetest of friends. He encouraged her not only to read, but to use those words to express herself by giving her a diary.
There is so much I was to say, but hate to because I know so many of you haven't seen the film yet. And I have to say this is a must see film. It is actually quite family friendly and if I had to rate it a 4 out of 5 stars for family friendliness. I laughed, cried, and felt that overwhelming joy by the end of the film.
Seriously if you see only one film this year, please let it be The Book Thief!
