How to Make Your Home Smell Like Christmas

Sometimes the best Christmas decorations can’t be seen at all. Ever. They can only be smelled! Smell has the incredible ability to transport us in time, to alter our mood, stress and behavior. Therefore, I consider it ‘a must’ to make our home smell like Christmas over the weekends prior to the big event. Just to get us in the mood and enjoy the Christmas spirit longer.

How to Make Your Home Smell Like Christmas?

You have a couple of options. First up, you can simply bake up a storm, using typical ingredients and spices used around Christmas time. Second, burn some essential oil on an oil burner or equivalent. Provided you don’t use paraffin candles to heat up the oil, many essential oils with the quint essential aromas of Christmas are healthy for you to breath in. And lest-best: use this clever in-between solution to make your home smell like Christmas:

Santa’s Secret pot of water on the stove with goodies…

Ingredients

4 liter or 1 gallon of water

1 orange, sliced

1 lemon, sliced

1/2 cup of cranberries

4 sticks of cinnamon

4-5 bay leaves

2 tables spoons of whole cloves.

Adjust this mix to your personal taste. E.g. You might like to add a bit of Allspice or nutmeg, or double the cranberries.

Instructions

Put a pan on the stove with about 4 liter of water.

Add the rest of the ingredients.

Let simmer on lowest heat, and add water from time to time to ensure it does not boil dry.

After a day, it will look a gooey mess, however, that gooey mess is your treasure. It will last you all month long.

Store in the fridge when cooled and not in use.

Then, when the other come home, it’s beginning to SMELL a lot like Christmas.

Try this. You’ll love it. A really fun treat for when you have impromptu visitors over also. Make the store-bought cookies somehow taste homemade.

Safety warning

Particularly in the holiday season, be extra careful not to leave the stove or candles on unattended. When we are particularly busy, it’s easy to overlook basic safety measures. A burned house does not smell like the kind of Christmas you want to remember, so stay well away from this. Let the aroma be fresh, and homey instead.
