From Chawana: My Version of a Protein Sensitive Deep Conditioning Treatment Adapted From Naptural85

Here is the beginning of the “From Chawana” Series…posts from a guest blogger named Chawana who has 4b/4c hair. She gave me this idea after seeing some posts from myself. We agreed that having an opinion from someone with a different hair type would provide more well-rounded content for you guys. I hope you enjoy and if you have a minute, show some love to Chawana by leaving a comment below.

From Chawana: My Version of a Protein Sensitive Deep Conditioning Treatment Adapted From Naptural85:

I am a 4c hair chick and I always wonder how certain things work on my texture versus other textures. I may have been looking in the wrong place but noticed the naturals who are 4c texture hair just looked so much different from mine. I asked myself what am I doing wrong? I am still learning how to care for my hair and I am 19 months post-BC.

I recently learned as a natural I am protein sensitive. What does this mean you may ask? If you’ve ever used a protein treatment and your hair was hard, crunchy, dry or felt brittle then you are protein sensitive.

Well Naptural85 (from YouTube) came up with a DC for protein sensitive naturals and my hair loves it. Here is a list of the ingredients I used:

1/4 cup Aloe Vera Juice
1 whole avocado
1/4 cup coconut milk
1/4 cup EVOO

*Depending on how thick and the length of your hair you may need to double the recipe.

I mix this with a food processor which made about 1 1/2 cups. You can use a hand mixer or your hand but keep in mind the mixture must be very smooth to avoid getting chunks of avocado in your hair. * Rule of thumb: the smoother the mix the easier to wash out.

Next I section my hair into 4 parts. Now you can do this on dry hair that has not been detangled. However, I like to mist my hair with a little water to separate my strands without pulling or tugging on them. By sectioning the hair it makes it easier to apply.

I apply like a relaxer from root to tips with my fingers. I make sure to evenly coat the hair. The pictures below show the DC in my hair and how the curl pattern comes through.

I cover with a plastic cap and sit under the dryer for 30-45 minutes because the heat helps the DC to penetrate the hair. After which I rinse and follow with a co-wash with warm water and end the process with rinsing with cool water. This helps to close the cuticles.

I style my hair by using a leave in conditioner (Giovanni Direct), seal with oil of choice (JBCO) and apply final butter or cream (shea butter mix or curl definer). As you can see I use the LOC method. Below are pictures of my final style but it was 2 days old and still very soft and shiny. I typically will but twists of some size as my weekly protective style.

I hope this helps someone if you’re experiencing drying, crunchiness or hard hair. Also, I try to do this every two weeks.
