Eating in Ghana: Reinventing Airplane Food

On my adventures, I’ve eaten countless meals on planes. Typically, they’re TV dinner-like mains with a motley and often incomprehensible assortment of sides. But eating on a plane doesn’t always have to be like this.

In December 2013, I had my first meal at a restaurant inside a plane. In Accra, Ghana, along the way to the airport, stands La Tante DC-10 Restaurant. The plane is a relic of the now defunct Ghana Airways that was transformed and opened as a restaurant in November 2013.

I couldn’t resist the kitschy traveler appeal of this place. Less than 24 hours after I landed in Accra and stepped off a plane, my family had dinner on this plane. And it was every bit of fun I hoped it would be.

Before entering the restaurant, we unabashedly took pictures of the plane in all of its bright green glory. Upon entering, I was happy to see that much of the seating was typical airplane seats that had been rearranged to form restaurant booths. We of course chose one of these booths over sitting at a boring old regular table. As you would expect, the waitresses at the restaurant don flight attendant attire.

Much of the food the restaurant serves is typical Ghanaian fare such as stews eaten with a starch, and staples you will find at most Ghanaian restaurants such as deliciously spiced meats with a choice of a side. I picked a reliable combination: chicken and jollof rice (no, it was nothing like the Jamie Oliver interpretation). I actually wasn’t expecting much from the food that night, but sure enough, my jollof and chicken were delicious. So, come to La Tante for the kitsch, and stay for the food.
