Slow Cooker Sticky Wings, a #wingweek guest post

Please help me welcome my second #wingweek guest poster, Karen from Karen's Kitchen Stories. Today Karen is sharing some beautifully sticky wings that are sweet, and just a little bit spicy—plus they're made in the slow cooker (my current favorite way to make a big batch of wings...or a small one)!
Hi!! Karen from Karen’s Kitchen Stories here! I can’t tell you how excited I am to be contributing this post to girlichef. Heather is one of the most creative cooks and prolific bloggers out there, and you can always find something delicious here. Heather is one talented woman and she writes from her heart.

These slow cooker sticky wings are sweet, slightly spicy, and, of course sticky. Plus, they are super easy to make. They are cooked on low in a slow cooker for 4 hours, brushed with a sticky sauce, and then broiled on both sides to give them a wonderful char. You get the best of both worlds; fall-off-the-bone, melt-in-your-mouth tenderness from the slow cooker, and a crispy charred skin from the broiler.

While I was making these for this post, my son and grandsons stopped by for a short visit. The first thing they said was “What smells so good?!” Needless to say, they waited until these finished broiling so they could try them. We sent them home with a nice care package for dinner.
Set out extra napkins and make everyone very happy with these easy to make and totally delicious wings.

Slow Cooker Sticky Wings Sweet, slightly spicy, sticky wings that you prepare in your slow cooker and finish under the broiler. Perfect for your game day menu!

Ingredients (serves 4-6)
  • 3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar, divided
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce, divided
  • 2 tablespoons minced ginger
  • 4 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, divided
  • 4 pounds trimmed and split chicken wings
  • Salt and pepper
  • Spray oil
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste

Instructions Add 1/4 cup of the brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of the soy sauce, the ginger, garlic, and 1/2 teaspoon of the cayenne powder into a 5 to 7 quart slow cooker and stir.
Sprinkle both sides of the chicken wings generously with salt and pepper.
Add the chicken to the slow cooker and toss with the sauce to coat.
Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 4 hours.
Place an oven rack about 10 inches below the broiler and line a baking sheet with foil. Place a rack in the baking sheet and spray it with spray oil. Turn on the oven to broil.
Place the wings on the rack. Discard the liquid from the slow cooker.
Combine the rest of the brown sugar, soy sauce, cayenne pepper, water, and tomato paste in a bowl. Brush the chicken with half of the sauce. Broil for 10 to 15 minutes, until browned and crisp.
Remove the pan from the oven, flip over the chicken, and brush it with the rest of the sauce. Broil for another 5 to 10 minutes, until charred and crisp. Serve immediately.

Is there any doubt as to why I'm sold on the magic of making chicken wings in a slow cooker?! I'm pretty sure I wouldn't object to eating these sticky beauties for any meal. When January rolls around, and season-ending football parties abound, I start craving chicken wings. Around here, it's come to be known as "my yearly craving" (though I'll happily eat them anytime of the year). What better way to satisfy my craving than to enjoy a week-long festival of ALL THINGS CHICKEN WINGS! Join me this week as I share a simple tutorial on how to break down whole chicken wings, introduce different cooking methods, and of course share new recipes so you can put those skills to use. I even have a few friends dropping by with their own chicken wing guest posts! This, my friends, is the start of a yearly tradition—welcome to #wingweek!
