If it was practical for me to wear a three-piece suit all the time, I would wear one every damn day. I spend a lot time talking about a three-piece suit’s versatility, but let’s talk a bit about the whole package. Timeless, classic, confident, masculine. A three-piece suit can look put together and nonchalant at the same time. The problem with wearing one on a daily basis is that, unless you’re in a line of work where a three-piece suit is required, it can come off as much too formal for modern life. Dress down a three-piece suit by swapping the jacket for a chunky knit shawl collar cardigan.

Get the Look

Substituting your suit jacket for a shawl collar cardigan is a softer, more casual expression of the three-piece suit. Great for chilly fall days and an easy business casual look.

Continue the casual inflections with a non-leather briefcase. Have one in your collection that’s wool, canvas, twill, or tweed, or a combination. If I’m carrying a briefcase made of fabric, I like to have a leather trim to lend it a bit of masculinity.
