Christmas Chalkboard Made From a Mirror

There are trends that everyone just absolutely loves. There are also trends that are classic and look great in a variety of decor. Such as, the chalkboard trend.

It’s been around for a while and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere…

Why would it?

It’s great.

Whatever style of home you have, you can make a chalkboard work. Plus, they’re not just for jotting down notes or leaving messages. They are no longer limited to the kitchen or the mudroom. They can be used anywhere…including a mantel.

Specifically, a Christmas mantel…

It’s such a fabulous project that sets the stage for my mantel. The whole design coordinates wonderfully with my black, white and burlap Christmas decor. It’s has a touch of rustic appeal, especially when paired with my vintage pieces and simple green garland.

The best part is that it cost me a total of about $3.00…and that was just for the chalk maker. The other supplies were ones I already had on hand. But even if you had to buy everything, it’s still a very affordable project.

My first step was to paint the mirror with the chalkboard paint. I applied two coats and allowed plenty of drying time in between. I did use a regular paintbrush, but I have also done this project with a small roller brush, which will give you less brush strokes.

While waiting for the paint to dry, I designed my quote and printed it to a size that worked with my mirror. I simply chose several fonts that I thought worked together and printed them from Microsoft Word. I taped them to the chalkboard to get a rough idea of the design.

Once I had it planned and measured, I began adding the quote to the chalkboard. To copy it to the board, I first rubbed chalk on the back of each word.

Then, I traced the letters with a regular ballpoint pen which transferred the chalk from the back of the paper to the chalkboard. I’ll be honest when I say that this was definitely the most time-consuming part.

Tracing the letter left a faint image of the letters in chalk, which then allowed me to be able to go back over the design with the chalk marker.

This was actually the first time I’ve used a chalk marker on one of my chalkboards. Chalk markers can be erased, but they can leave trace of the original design, especially when left for a long time. But, considering this is a Christmas decoration that I will undoubtedly use in Christmas future, that won’t be a problem.

Also, I did not season this chalkboard. It is definitely recommended to season a chalkboard, so that anything you write on the board will wipe away without a trace. But as I mentioned, I wasn’t worried about that and I wanted this chalkboard to have that deep dark look of the chalkboard paint.

The mirror trim originally was a dark brown, so I decided to paint it a soft white. I used Americana Chalky Finish paint because it requires no priming or sanding. It’s great to just be able to paint it on and be done with it.

It’s the perfect centerpiece for my Christmas mantel. I surrounded the chalkboard with white branches and green garland. I added a vintage toolbox and a corked bottle. The entire arrangement says…

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas!
