How To Get Preen’s ’70s Hair At Home

The '70s are the new '90s, guys, it's official. Stringy Cobain hair will always be close to our hearts, but now's the time for length punctuated with loose bends, a center part, and some healthy frizz if you're feeling frisky. We're already in—mind, body, and spirit (Exhibit A; Exhibit B).

Today's example of said trend comes courtesy of Preen's Fall 2015 collection last Sunday. Hairstylist Syd Hayes (L’Oréal Paris) and makeup artist Val Garland (MAC) went unapologetically disco in reference, with some Farrah Fawcett and Laura Ashley thrown in for laid-back good measure.

"The collection made me think of the extremely iconic Grace Coddington and her incredible hair," Hayes said. "That led to the amazing texture that floated down the runway." First she "bulked up the hair" with L'Oréal Studio Line's Hot and Big (ed note: not available in the US). For volume, they "rik-raked" the hair, wrapping two-inch sections of hair in a figure-eight pattern through larger U pins. "Then we clamped the hair with straightening irons. The texture turns into a zig-zag and gives an explosion of volume." Brush out and back-comb with a bristle brush (they used a Mason Pearson) and set with a bit of extra strength gel and Elnett to keep things from getting too crazy.

Makeup was soft and simple—very warm and brown from lips to lids. Final step: a Bee Gees record and an old pair of bell bottoms, and you're set. Can you dig it?
