Behind The Print: Agate

Blue hues and intricate pattern flows through our Spring Summer 2015 collection, especially with the arrival of our new agate print. We caught up with Jigsaw Print Designer Lisa Berridge to hear all about the design process behind it:

“At the start of every season, we put our mood boards together and find images from all kinds of different sources: photographers, art exhibitions, nature in general… From there, I did lots of research – the print needed to fit into our color palette for the season. It was created using couture printing and the placement had to fit the garment exactly – it took three months to get it right! I usually create a painting and hand it over to the studio team but this time I had to get involved in making sure the print matched up on the other side of the Agate Print Structured Dress, making sure the seams matched the seams… The juxtaposition between the blue tones and the white background on the Agate Placement Skirt is very beautiful. The way the agate billows down the skirt is just like its natural form.

Believed to be named for the Sicilian River Achates, the beauty of agate has been documented for thousands of years. Formed in fractures between ancient lava flows, each agate stone’s colour is affected by pressure, changes in temperature and mineral content. Unsurprisingly, its signature band of pattern has captivated the world and has even been ascribed mystical powers such as protection from heavy weather and danger. Inspired by the new season print, we looked to London’s Natural History Museum to discover the impressive agate specimens in its collection. Whilst they may not be as colorful as our Spring Summer 2015 print, it’s hard not to be amazed by their intricate markings:
