12 Days of Christmas: DIY Wreaths & Inspiration

This year I made wreaths with my cousin and my good friend, Natalie. I had never done it before and was a bit worried about how it would turn out, but all of them are gorgeous! My cousin's is still in progress (she's an interior designer, so her things are much better thought out and executed than mine!) so I'll have to show you a final picture another day. Natalie and I used basic, traditional wreaths from Hobby Lobby, size W. They're $9.99, but are currently on sale for $4.99. In fact, everything used is on sale for 50% off! Aside from the basic wreath, I also bought a ton of floral Christmas picks. There is an entire aisle of them at Hobby Lobby priced between .99 cents and $3.49, and then on sale for half off.

I tried to think of a way to make a full tutorial out of this, but it was just way easier than we expected! The only think you really need to know is that the picks can be deconstructed and then they will REALLY work for you. You can rip the branches right from the stem and use their wire OR cut them free with wire cutters. I like to rip them out and use the wire. For my super traditional wreath, which is a stark contrast to our very wild tree, I chose my color palette and simply shoved the picks into the wreath! I deconstructed many of them so that they would lay better and not be so clumpy. The bells bulbs were attached using floral wire. I wound it around the loop in the bell/bulb and then around the wire base of the wreath. Same thing for the "Merry Christmas" sign. The poinsettias and pics were literally shoved in. Deconstructed picks were wrapped around the branches. You will want to consider symmetry and also the rule of thumb is to have everything in odd numbers (1 sign, 3 poinsettias, etc.). That will keep your wreath looking balanced and beautiful!
**Also- if you look at the picture above, my wreath is hanging from a glittery red hanger. I bought a standard white metal over the door wreath hanger at Hobby Lobby ($1.50) and then followed my GLITTER ANYTHING instructions to create it.**

Kimberly used a standard empty floral wire wreath base (Hobby Lobby, $3). She purchased floral picks as well as branches (same section). The branches and picks are pushed into the wire base and attached using floral wire wrapped around their base and the wreath base.

Here it is now, the base is complete and she's adding final touches. I see more reindeer (smaller) on the table, so perhaps there's a theme brewing!

And lastly, Kimberly's garland! This was created using a wreath base (you can get some from Hobby Lobby, starting at $4.99 for a traditional strand) and picks. She also used eucalyptus leaves and added them to her base.

The garland is attached to the railing using ribbon at three points, creating the swoop effect.

I wanted to throw out some traditional and non-traditional wreaths that weren't made entirely from burlap or ornaments. I work in the craft industry for my other job too and the vast majority of wreaths being made at home are burlap. I thought it would be nice to throw out a super traditional wreath and then a few others for inspiration as well.
