Drake – Over My Dead Body, Shot For Me

Take Care, Track 1 :

Over My Dead Body feat. Chantal Kreviazuk

I’d never bothered to check before now, but for some reason I’d always thought the vocals on this were a sample, but they’re not, they’re by Canadian adult-contemporary artist Chantal Kreviazuk. Her vocals and the production on this are beautiful, and for me, they are the stars of this particular show.

What I like from Drake on this, is his delivery on certain lines, like the way he emphasises ‘States’ and ‘Case’ in, ‘Just performed at a bar mitzvah in the States(ssss), used half of the money to beat my brother’s cas(sssss)e’. Or the way he sing-songs ‘Oh you wanna be a maafuckin funny guuyyy.’ Another thing, it’s not like boasting is a new concept for Drake, but I got the sense that when he talks about being the best in the game in this album, he was actually starting to believe it. I think before this album, he was perhaps trying to #stayhumble, perhaps hold back a little bit because he was the new guy, in a way trying to respect his elders or whatever. But I reckon it was this album that he started to think, ‘Nah, fuck that, I’m actually better than everyone.’

From memory, Take Care overall was a lot more cohesive sounding, and less ‘pop’ than ‘Thank Me Later’.

Take Care, Track 2 :

Shot For Me

Ha. I kind of always imagine a girl at some dive bar chugging away on straight bourbon, drinking away her sorrows while Drake’s voice plays over and over in her mind as he chides her with the fact that she’ll never do better than him. And then Drake goes beyond that, saying, ‘bitch, I made you – everything you are, is me.’ And then she passes out, because, fuck – that’s depressing bro.

How many of you thought of Auckland, or the city you live in, when you heard this line? – “I think the city that we’re from just kinda ruined things, It’s such a small place: not much to do but talk and listen.”
