Primp Tip: How to Save Chapped Lips

We’ve spent a lot of time talking about all of the amazing things that come along with summer…picnic essentials, poolside snacks and so much more. However, summer isn’t all sunshine and party popcorn. There are a few things that come along with higher temps and spending more time in the sun that aren’t so pleasant.

Now, you already know that you should always, always wear sunscreen to protect your skin and avoid painful and damaging burns. And today we’re going to talk about another summer skin hazard that long days at the beach or pool can cause. I’m talking about those pesky chapped lips that inevitably come with the summer months.

I recently did a little research to help us say goodbye to dry lips for good. Here are a handful of tips and tricks that that actually work for healing chapped lips and giving you the perfect pout you’re looking for. Take a look…

Drink Up

One of the main causes of chapped lips is dehydration. When your lips become dry, they’re actually telling you that they’re thirsty! Make sure to drink plenty of water each and every day so that you can hydrate that pout from the inside out. If you need help drinking your daily dose of h20, take a look at Lauren’s foolproof trick for drinking more water.

Scrub It Out

Exfoliating your lips every once in a while is a great way to remove dry, dead skin and reveal soft lips. Try out this brown sugar & olive oil scrub if you’re looking to DIY it. If you’re not in the mood to get crafty, Sara Happ makes the best lip scrub around. It comes in flavors like crème brulee, pink grapefruit, vanilla bean and even red velvet (yum).

Keep it Balmy

Having a great lip balm is the key to happy, moisturized lips. What makes a good lip balm, you might ask? You’ll want to find a balm without too many chemicals, which can actually irritate and dry out your lips even more. Finding a balm that’s as natural as possible, and includes ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, olive oil and cocoa butter is your best bet. My absolute favorite balm is Jouer’s Lip Enhancer. I have a little tube of it in every bag I carry! One more tip: Make sure to put lip balm on after you wash your face, to make sure you give those lips a little extra hydration after washing them clean.

Don’t Lick Your Lips

When your lips are dry, sometimes the first instinct is to give them a good lick. Now, licking your chapped lips may offer temporary relief, but it’s actually the worst thing you can do. Your saliva will dry out your lips all over again, causing them to become even more painful and chapped. This is when it’s important to have a moisturizing lip balm on hand at all times. Whenever you have the urge to lick those dry lips, reach for the balm instead.

Eat Your Vegetables

According to Healthline, if your body is too acidic it can cause chapped lips. Eating fruits and veggies will restore your body’s PH to a proper level. A great way to get all of your fruits and veggies right off the bat is to make a smoothie every morning. Fill it with greens and the fruit of your choice and blend away. Try this green smoothie (it’s one of my favorites) and make sure to read these skinny smoothie secrets, too.

And here’s one more bonus tip: If you have chapped lips, avoid spicy and salty foods. They can irritate your lips and cause inflammation, which will delay the healing process.

Do you have any tried and true tips to add to the list?
