The Drift

The Drift in Bishopsgate is another of Drake & Morgan’s fab restaurants & bars. Danny and I visited The Drift for dinner and even though I was familiar with the menu I was still pretty surprised when my chicken came out in a basket, but more on that in a bit.

Inside The Drift it is a great space, downstairs you have a large bar, perfect for after work drinks in the Liverpool Street area and then upstairs you have the restaurant, with low lighting and an open kitchen, plus another bar as well. There are big glass panels so I imagine it lets a lot of light in during the day. When you reserve a table, they always place the cute card reserve slip on the table which I just love, this one even came complete with stickman drawing.

Let’s get straight onto to the food and drink, that is what we are all here for!

We started off with a couple of cocktails, I had the Skinny Lovely Bubbly which pretty much describes this cocktail straight away. It is a mixture of Pampero rum, mint, skinny agave, fresh lime and topped up with bubbly. To me this was right up my street, I love cocktails Like Grey Goose Le Fizz and Mojitos and this tasted like a mixture of the two. Danny’s cocktail was the Lavender Love a gin based cocktail with raspberry, lemon, egg white and sugar. We weren’t wanting too much to start off with so we ordered a basket of bread and also a sharing platter of Spanish hams; serrano, chorizo and salchichón. The basket tin is full of a whole selection of breads and the ham went with it perfectly.

For mains I went for the chicken in a basket, now I know it says ‘a basket’ on the menu, but I really wasn’t expecting this to arrive in well a basket. Here I was presented with a picnic style basket and inside was a small chicken with plenty of chips. I loved the quirkiness and definitely one I will remember, plus the chicken was pretty tasty I must say!

Danny ordered the Wagyu beef burger with blue cheese, tomato chutney and chips, it was tender and juicy as you would expect, but if you are not a fan of blue cheese this probably won’t be for you as it was strong in flavour on that front. We also swapped to a glass of wine each, one white, a Sauvignon Blanc and red, a Malbec. What I love about The Drift is the varied menu, there is something for everyone, sometimes I’m not sure what type of food I want that evening so a place that has a mixture is perfect.

For dessert it was an easy choice. I had eaten the Wagon Wheel dessert before at The Fable and it was just so, so good. It is a twist on the biscuit and is toasted meringue, quite like a s’more with deliciously tasty raspberry sorbet and shortbread. It is definitely one of the best desserts I have tried.

Danny had the hot chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream, a perfect way to warm up from the cold weather. I also enjoyed one of the pudding cocktails, the Cranberry brûlée, this was a gin cocktail with cranberry sauce, egg white, sugar and lemon. It was sweet and perfect for pudding, in fact it quite felt like a meal in itself, so I’d maybe get it next time to enjoy on its own.
