What’s In Your Makeup Bag: My Mum

In honour of Mother’s Day, I sat down with my beautiful mum for a chat about her makeup memories and favourite beauty buys…

“My earliest beauty memory was making ‘perfume’ by putting rose petals in water. It would turn to slime and be absolutely disgusting. After that it’s of my mum. She always looked lovely when she went out. She wore her hair up in a beehive with a chignon…eyeliner, mascara and lipstick.

I was probably about 13 or 14 when I started wearing makeup. I was a bit of a tomboy so didn’t wear much, but when I was older (and getting into my hippy phase) I used to paint flowers on my cheeks. I mainly bought makeup from Miners, but later there was Mary Quant and Biba which was really exciting at the time. The colours were probably a bit wild looking back…and I was allergic to Biba eyeshadow. It made my eyes swell up!”

“I had phases of using skincare but I didn’t really start a routine until I was in my 20s. During my hippy phase it was really just witch hazel from the health food shop. I developed psoriasis when I was 15 and it started on my face so I had to avoid a lot of products, especially if they were fragranced. I’ve always been careful to take my makeup off though, even If I just use a wipe. There’s no way I could sleep in it. And I’ve always moisturised.

I’m quite faithful to brands. I used to use Clinique skincare, but over the years my skin has changed. It’s still combination, but a little drier. In the morning I wash my face in the shower then use Origins Plantscription Anti-Ageing Cream SPF25. I like the texture and it stops my skin feeling tight.”

“In the evening I cleanse with Emma Hardie Amazing Face Moringa Cleansing Balm. I found using a balm quite strange initially, but you don’t need much and it makes my skin feel really soft and clean. It smells beautiful. I get puffiness and darkness under my eyes so I use a Decleor eye cream for that. Some nights I use Origins Drink Up Intensive overnight mask. On other nights I use Pai Age Confidence Echium & Amaranth oil. It makes my skin glow. The smell reminds me of a spa and I find it really relaxing to use; it’s my treat. My skin can get quite ashy looking so I use REN Glycolactic Mask to exfoliate once a week. I feel like it gets rid of all the grime.

My makeup is very basic. I used bareMinerals but I felt like it was looking too ‘flat’. Now I use NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser. I’ve never been able to wear heavy makeup and foundation used to be so thick, so this one’s like a miracle for me. It just feels like moisturiser but adds brightness to the skin. I don’t get blemishes now so I just use Origins Plantscription Anti-Ageing Concealer under my eyes. It applies nicely and doesn’t crease. I still use bareMinerals for bronzer. Their ‘Warmth‘ shade is quite dark but I’m olive toned and it stops me looking washed out.”

“I have the Urban Decay Naked palette. I really like the variety of colours and they’re really easy to apply, but I’m not sure if I should be using the pearly shades now I’m a bit older…though I seem to be getting away with it (laughs). I like Bobbi Brown brushes for eyeshadow. They’re amazing quality; I’ve had mine for years. I always curl my eyelashes, then I apply mascara just to the top lashes. I do my eyebrows while they dry and then I do the bottom lashes. I got that tip from

Lisa Eldridge. I use Giorgio Armani Stretch Lengthening mascara. It’s a bit expensive but it’s the one thing I use everyday. I love the brush because it catches every lash…and it smells like roses.

I do have some tweezers in my makeup bag but it was the fashion to over-pluck eyebrows when I was younger and mine never grew back, so they’re a bit redundant! My best find is the Shu Uemura Hard Formula 9 eyebrow pencil in Seal Brown. I have two because you have to get them specially sharpened. I’ve used various powders and pencils in the past but the colours never seemed right. This one always looks fairly natural and stays all day. I feel like it finishes my face.

I always apply blush last. I have one from & Other Stories in ‘Canvas Taupe’ which I use most days, but it’s very pigmented so I dab the brush on a tissue first. If I’m going out in the evening I use a NARS Multiple in ‘Orgasm’ which is like a highlighter and blush in one. It adds life to my face. I can never find an opaque lip colour that suits me, so I prefer sheer lipsticks or glosses. I really like Bobbi Brown glosses, they give just enough colour and sheen but they’re not too sticky.”
