Working behind a desk meaning sitting in the same place for hours at a time often for several days a week can leave you a bit uninspired.

But those same-shit-different-day-days will also make your life seem shorter: your brain experiences time much faster when you do the same things over and over again and not take in much new information: e.g. take the same route to work every day. This is because the more we age, the more often we come into contact with information that our brains have already processed. This familiar information takes a shortcut through our brains, giving us the feeling that time is speeding up and passing us by. That’s also why children experience time to go by music slower, because everything is new to them, they make a lot of distinct memories. When we receive lots of new information, it takes our brains a while to process it. The longer this processing takes, the longer that period of time feels.

Unfortunately most of us don’t have the time to try new activities daily or don’t have the luxury to travel all over the world all the time to get more new information and experience more time. But you can take matters into your own hands by altering your current surroundings and surprise your brain with something new. Surroundings are incredibly important to me as it is how we visually experience life. My working environment is even more important for my creative process and bringing a bit of change now and then helps so much in staying inspired.

Simply rearranging furniture literally and very radically brings new perspectives. It alters the space and the energy even if you’re not adding anything different or new. Yesterday I ‘reshaped’ my workspace, turned the table around and put it right in the middle of the space. My favorite moment of rearranging furniture is entering the room next day not thinking about the new set up, and being surprised for a little second.
