indoor cycling gear: what to wear so you get there

There’s good reason that indoor cycling has been around since the 1980s. A full body cardio workout, these days it’s usually packed into 45 to 60 minute sessions that target your legs, core and self-determination. It’s not too bad for your personal life, either.

“My husband and I discovered it was the first workout we enjoyed doing together,” says Jillian Sheridan, owner of the serene new, Moroccan-inspired Eastwood Cycle Sanctuary in Vancouver.

To kick off a day that includes cycling, a substantial breakfast—definitely with carbs—and a big coffee are morning musts, says Jillian. Soup, juice, and a whack of water keep her going all day until a protein-and-greens heavy dinner.

Dashing between class, meetings and instructor rides, she styles her sweat apparel with boyfriend jeans, sweaters, hats and slip-on sneakers. “I keep a locker full of clothes in case I need to change roles,” she admits. For spin, though, it’s always “a sleeveless top with a high neck, a sports bra with firm support, lightweight cropped leggings or padded shorts—medium length.” On her headphones? “Anything old school rap with a good beat,” she says.

So you’re not left scrambling to get dressed, packed and out the door for your pre-dawn cycle to your indoor cycle—and to lighten your bag—wear versatile pieces over your sweat outfit for warmth. Pack a change of clothes that will continue to wick sweat as you cool down post-ride, and get you through your day stylishly. Now go, get (back) into the saddle.
