Leopold Stokowski Conducts ShostakovichSymphony No. 5 - The Boston Symphony

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor (arr. Stokowski) FRANZ SCHUBERT Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D 759 DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47 Boston Symphony Orchestra LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI, conductor Recorded Tanglewood, Lenox, MA on 15 August 1965
The Old Wizard's legendary 1965 appearance at Tanglewood ranks right up there with the many superb performances from the previous season by Steinberg, Barbirolli and Ormandy as some of the finest playing ever done by the BSO. IMHO this is quite the best of the many DSCH Fives left to us under Stokowski's baton. The big picture remains remarkably consistent throughout all his readings but the Boston Symphony plays with such fire and precision, along with a tonal weight, even in the fastest passages, which is sometimes missing in Stokowski's other readings.
The concert opens with two of Stoki's trademarks. Extensive announcements included.
