William Steinberg Conducts Franz LisztEine Faust-Symphonie

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART Serenade No. 13 in G, K 525 "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" IGOR STRAVINSKY Scherzo Fantastique, Op. 3 FRANZ LISZT Eine Faust-Symphonie in drei Charakterbildern, S 108 Philip Cho, tenor Framingham Choral Society WILLIAM STEINBERG, conductor Recorded Symphony Hall, Boston, MA on 09 January 1970
Steinberg's concerts from January 1970 (all available from the Gnome) are among the finest he gave in Boston. The DAS LIED VON DER ERDE has gone on to be one of the Gnome's most popular posts (along with the amazing SACRE DU PRINTEMPS). The Dvorak Piano Concerto/Bruckner 6 concert contains first-rate performances of both works.
The Faust Symphony had a long association with Boston dating back to 1894 and was performed by conductors Karl Muck, Max Fiedler, Monteux, Koussevitzky, Munch, Bernstein and Simon Rattle. Steinberg's reading is more animated the Bernstein's and has more gravitas than Munch. Koussevitzky's rehearsal from 1948 is not generally available. A few glitches here and there but extremely listenable and the sound is full and detailed.
These concerts marked the first performance of the Scherzo Fantastique for the BSO and it was not given again until 1982. The ubiquitous Nachtmusik opens the concert.
