I recently had the privilege of participating in a special advance screening of an upcoming Christian film. The movie is called “THE SONG” and is set to come out in theaters on September 26th. Since it hasn’t come out yet, this post will not be a detailed review of the film where I talk about what I liked or didn’t like about the movie, the acting, specific scenes, or a few technical aspects. I intend to publish another (more detailed) review around the first weekend of October, so as not to spoil any part of the movie in this blog post.

What does it mean to keep God at the center of your marriage?
We all have seen one too many movies mirroring the realities of life especially where love between two individuals is the axis upon which the whole story revolves. Boy meets girl, they fall in love, get married and make a shocking and painful discovery together that life isn’t a “happily ever after” kinda deal after all. However, it’s not often that a film comes along highlighting God’s pivotal role in the success and endurance of a marriage and the devastating consequences of taking Him out of the equation. THE SONG magnificently takes on that aspect head on.
I often hear people say, “Keep God at the center of your marriage” when they express their well wishes to newlyweds. Married couples use it too as their default response when asked about their secret to a long lasting marriage. However, what does it really mean to keep God at the center of a marriage?
THE SONG drew for us a very clear bulls-eye of what a God-centered marriage should be: it has to fully comply with God’s standards for marriage from A to Z – from the waiting to the wedding to life-after-the-wedding! The way I understood it, keeping God at the center of your marriage goes far deeper than just sharing the same belief in the existence of God, or going to church together, or even praying together. It means both you and your spouse must keep God’s commandments deeply embedded in your hearts and faithfully obey those commandments, and fulfilling God’s purpose for you TOGETHER – until death do you part.
Why King Solomon?
So if the creators of THE SONG wanted to help transform marriages through a movie, why did they choose to tackle the issues of temptation, sex, substance abuse, and self-gratification? And why choose the life of King Solomon and his “Song of Songs” as a springboard?
I believe that if you want to impact a world with a message that will dramatically change lives, you start with the family unit; and what better way to accomplish that than to begin ministering to the husbands and the wives!
To the filmmakers’ credit, THE SONG, I must say, is one brave film. First of all, King Solomon’s “Song of Songs” is that one book in the Bible about which many Christians tend to be evasive. If you’re not familiar with the Song of Songs (also called Song of Solomon), it explicitly describes desire and sexual intimacy between a man (Solomon) and a woman (the Shulamite). Surprisingly, it also talks about chastity. In my years of attending Bible studies with fellow married women, I don’t remember there having been one time that we ever discussed this book. Like I said, a lot of people shy away from discussing it, let alone doing an in-depth study of it. Second, King Solomon was one controversial and fascinating (albeit dispiriting) character in the Bible. The son of King David who, having been gifted with unparalleled wisdom, wealth and so much more by God Himself, had everything any man could ever ask for, and still turned away from God! What inspiration or motivation could we possibly draw from his example?!
As it turned out, couples can learn so much from King Solomon’s story. He was a perfect example of one who had everything and still struggled with lust, covetousness, idolatry and discontent. He was a perfect example of a man whose only desire in the beginning was to gain wisdom so he could live a life pleasing to the Lord, yet ended up forgetting the Giver of the gift. He was a perfect example that even a mighty king can stumble and fall. His story makes it a lot easier for us simple folks to acknowledge our weaknesses without feeling condemned.
The truth is that just like King Solomon, Christian couples are not immune to sin and its consequences. They also struggle with the same problems as non-Christian couples, and are just as vulnerable to different forms of temptation. This is what makes the moral of THE SONG more universally applicable and easier to swallow.
So, if you seek to understand what it means for God to really be at the center of your marriage, please allow this interpretation of King Solomon’s life and works minister to you and your spouse. Together, we can learn from Solomon’s mistakes and more importantly, we all can learn how not to repeat his mistakes.
