Review and Synopsis:

The Truth Commission is definitely unlike anything that I have ever read before as its genre is very new to the Young Adult world. Having the genre of “creative non-fiction”, this book has the opportunity to explore anything and everything using unusual methods and I am more than pleased to see that the author Susan Juby has made good use of this opportunity.

This book follows Normandy Pale (not a great fan of this name, by the way) and her friends as they form a truth commission that aims to explore the truths behinds the many different people from their art school. It has many creative illustrations and footnotes and they definitely are helpful in making this title more fun than it already is.

Regarding the character developments of this book, they are very well done. The three main characters have all been shaped carefully and each of them has some characteristics that make it easy to differentiate them. Moreover, the side characters are also well developed. They all have their own stories and all of them are very different from each other. Readers really get to see them grow throughout the course of the book and it is certainly very satisfying. It is clear that Susan Juby has spent a lot of time crafting her characters and her efforts definitely pay off. The development of the side characters may not be essential to the plot but her efforts help in making The Truth Commission more than just another Young Adult novel.

One thing that slightly bugs me is the romance between two of the main characters. I understand why Susan Juby wants to corporate romance into her novel – because it highlights the significance of the truth commission, not because it is a mainstream thing to do, if that’s what you are thinking – and it certainly is a clever way to portray this idea. However the romance seems poorly developed, especially when compared to the wonderfully developed characters. It jumps out of nowhere and thus seems a little forced.

In general, The Truth Commission is a highly unique work of art that many will definitely enjoy. It is a very refreshing title and it is also highly innovative. The plot is also very interesting. The originality that Susan Juby has displayed in this work will certainly be appreciated by readers.
