Our Skate Date

I feel like a lot of Canadians are just really good at skating, whether that be because a lot of kids here grow up playing hockey or because it gets so cold in some parts that people can easily skate around on the ponds and lakes in their neighborhood. Whatever the reason, it seems I am not part of that demographic. I didn’t grow up playing hockey, it rarely got cold enough for our lake to freeze over in winter, and the skating lessons I had to take in PE just did not pay off.

Cole and I had this great idea to go downtown today and give ice skating a try. We went to this cute outdoor rink that is right in the middle of the city, rented some skates and got on the ice. Ohhh man, it had been a while since I went skating. I had this idea in my head that yeah, I could skate fine (though I was no professional)… but wow, I was wrong. I suck! It took me a while to get my balance and yes, part of that “while” may or may not have included me ripping around the rink using one of those plastic things you lean on that are made for small children… there’s no shame in my game, friends!

While I may not be part of the great Canadian skater demographic, I am part of the one that includes all the people with insanely dry skin (I know, lucky me, right?). Even the smallest amount of cold winter air and/or wind sucks the life right out of my face, hands and lips. Thankfully, I’ve got a bit of an anti-winter skincare regime that has been keeping my skin pretty top notch, considering the weather.

For my face, I’ve been using pretty much any moisturizer that is on the heavier side. Lightweight moisturizers do nothing for me this time of year and I need that thicker layer of moisture to protect my skin from the cold and wind. For my lips, I LOVE good ol’ Vaseline lip therapy (I love the cocoa butter one especially). It’s made with Vaseline jelly, and that’s what I used to use on my lips when I was younger. Last but not least, I make sure to lather up my hands and any exposed skin with Vaseline Intensive Care Advanced Repair lotion BEFORE heading out, as well as after. I feel like moisturizing is often an afterthought, but you can do so much to prevent the annoying dry skin or chapped lip situations by making sure you’re moisturizing in advance of heading out into the cold! This lotion is insanely moisturizing and my skin feels so soft instantly after using it. I love that it’s fragrance free, too, because I have sensitive skin and I never know what’s going to rile it up. It retails for around $5 for a good sized bottle and at that price, it’s totally worth it to have it on hand (literally, get it!).

Our skate date lasted a whole… 20 minutes maybe? Hahah. We decided to ditch the skates and go for a wander downtown for the rest of the afternoon instead. We got coffee, did a little shopping, ate some lunch and then happily headed home. I’d call that a date success, even if we sucked at skating!

Have you ever gone ice skating? Are you as good as I am? ;)
