With Frieze kicking off this week, there’s no doubting this season’s art-inspired pieces will be having a bit of a moment.

Not the type who likes their clothes to shout – rather than whisper – modernist statements? Don’t panic. Because on the opposite end of the spectrum to the bold Surrealist, Deco and Dadaist prints that flooded the catwalks, this autumn/winter 2014 also welcomed a refreshingly calm and purist new mood that’s sure to please those who hold the philosophy of less is more.

So, keeping it simple is what it’s all about this season. And if you’re wondering how exactly to achieve the kind of pared-back elegance you saw on the Victoria Beckham, Calvin Klein and Joseph runways, just remember that muted neutrals, fluid lines, softly sculpted silhouettes and smooth surface finishes are all defining characteristics of this trend.

Minimalist it all may be, but you’ll be surprised at how functional these refined classics with a twist are. Just take a look at Christophe Lemaire‘s slouchy knits – expertly draped and layered for a subtly luxurious effect that’s also practical and cosy – and Marc Jacobs‘ plush wool midi dresses and semi louche flared pants, great for dressing up or down, and you’ll get the idea. Plus, who wouldn’t want to wrap themselves up in one of Lucas Nascimento or Haider Ackermann‘s ribbed sweater dresses - the breakthrough off-duty piece of the season – this winter? We know we would. But if you’d rather something a little more forgiving, then The Row‘s ankle-grazing funnel neck shift captures the mood perfectly, too.

Another key piece to look out for – and perhaps the most worthwhile investment one could make this season – is the cocoon coat: ever so slightly outsized, boasting soft, curving shoulders and minimalist fastenings or hidden button panels. Rochas and Cedric Charlier‘s renditions are our current favourites; just throw them over a pair of louche tailored trousers or a knitted jumpsuit a la Haider Ackermann, or even a boucle turtleneck shift by Emilia Wickstead, for an effortlessly chic effect.

And as for those who prefer something that packs a bit more punch (without sacrificing their stealth appeal), then J.W. Anderson‘s sculptural, bias-cut separates will work wonders for daytime, while Christopher Kane‘s futuristic black dresses with coiled sleeves will be perfect for evening. Just remember to keep accessories minimal, finishing off your look with the most discreet handbag you can find.
