How to Create a Blog Media Kit in 10 Simple Steps

Thought about working with companies but are not sure where to begin? Start by first constructing an effective and appealing blog media kit. Here’s how:

Communicating your own flair and style is imperative but be sure sure to pepper in these 10 basic elements for winning marketing material.

1 | Header - Simple and concise, the header provides quick visibility on the web address and the theme of your blog.

2 | About - What is the general jest of your blog and why is it different from other blogs?

3 | Market - Who are your readers? Share analysis of your Google Analytics metrics (ex. Country), review your total Disqus comment count, and identify exactly who your target market is. No, not just “women” or “people who like to travel”. Get specific with the age and interests of your readers.

4 | Screenshot - Provide an attractive screenshot of your blog. In the image below, I used a desktop mockup that I found of creativemarket.com. I simply uploaded a screenshot into the Photoshop file and viola, I have an attractive graphic of my online space.

5 | Proof - Reviews from previous partnerships speak volumes. As you begin to work with companies, actively seek feedback on their experience working with you. It’ll aid you in improving your offerings and provide validation for future partnerships.

6 | Picture - Just as we love seeing a profile photo on our blogs, share one here as well. It helps the viewer quickly identify the voice behind the words. For consistency, use the same image that you currently use on the side bar of your blog.

7 | Story - Your elevator pitch! Share the good ole spiel that you’ve constructed to quickly explain why your blog matters and why readers find and follow your content.

8 | Stats - Quantitative statistics identifying your influence – the number of Bloglovin’ readers, RSS subscribers, social media followers, youtube subscribers, monthly page views and so on. Be sure to pull these numbers from valid sources (ex. Google Analytics) and keep them up to date! This is the meat and potatoes of your social media kit and the section that companies can most identify with.

9 | Content Sample - Use images of your travels, recipes, how-to instructions, etc. to provide a glimpse at the content of your blog. I enjoy travel photography tremendously so I focused on sharing some of my best work.

10 | Date - As your own check and for clarification that the information is current, add the month and year in the footer of the kit.

Lastly – Stuck on formatting? Considering checking Etsy for resume templates that you can modify to make your own.

The next step?

During your initial point of contact, provide your current blog media kit (in PDF format) along with a thoughtful email on why you think a partnership would be successful for all parties involved. It’s taken awhile for me to hone in on what it important to communicate in this kit – remember, stats like page views and the target market are critical but sometimes using blogger-terminology and more advanced metrics (ex. Klout scores, which not everyone is familiar with) isn’t as relevant for communicating value to companies.
