St. Patrick’s Day Pot of Gold
Hi everyone! Laura here from Pet Scribbles with an easy way to make your own St. Patrick’s Day Pot of Gold! No, this little pot of gold won’t make you rich, but it can make you smile!
The two basics you’ll need? A miniature peat pot and some small wooden pieces you can find at craft or home improvement stores.
There are many tutorials out there for decorating peat pots, and I’ve got a few over on my blog (click here to see), but this is the first time I’m adding feet to a peat pot.
After placing the feet where I wanted them, I attached them using Aleene’s Turbo Tacky Glue.
Squirt some glue onto the part of the foot to be attached to the peat pot, then press and hold for about 30 seconds. I keep my other hand inside the peat pot, pressing against the wooden foot, to help it begin to adhere. (The peat pot material is soft, so having your hand pressing against from the inside helps to keep the surface firm for better adhesion.)
Next, I painted the peat pot (now with attached feet) with black Chalky Finish paint from DecoArt. Below is what the peat pot looked like after one coat. You’ll notice I missed a few spots here and there because of the textured surface of the peat pot. Adding a second coat of paint took care of these spots.
I rested the peat pot on a plastic jar lid while I worked, and used the lid as a pedestal that I could turn and move around without worrying about getting paint on my fingers. (Handy tip!)
While waiting for the peat pot to dry, I popped over to The Graphics Fairy and found some pretty St. Patrick’s Day-themed printables. (Click here to see the full selection and to download.)
Once I printed and cut them out, I used a Distress Ink pad on the edges and also smudged a bit of ink onto the front of the images to make them look old.
An easy way to add some hidden filler to your peat pot is to cut up a paper bag and crumple it up inside.
For the actual gold, I simply took a bunch of gold ribbon full of glittery, shiny goodness, and arranged it on top of the hidden filler.
St. Patrick’s Day Pot of Gold
I used a glue dot to adhere the circular image to the front of the pot. (I ended up not using the other image I had printed out, but am saving it for another project.)
I love how the peat pot looks like a small iron kettle pot!
You could make several of these and fill them with gold foil-wrapped candy to give as party favors, or as a sweet (pun intended) hostess gift if you’re attending a St. Patty’s Day party.
