DIY Marquee Letter Night Light - Tutorial

Sponsored by the lovely people at Spotlight in celebration of National Craft Month

It's been a long time since I've blogged about a craft other than sewing, but what better time to do it than National Craft Month? Last week I was invited to attend Spotlight's launch of National Craft Month and it was fantastic to attend and get a sneak peek behind the scenes of a store that I shop at all the time.

I met some of the people who make the decisions about new fabric ranges and craft products and was able to chat to them about cool new stuff and even check out new exciting quilting fabric ranges that are not released yet. Fun!

Upon leaving, the team at Spotlight gave us a very generous goodie bag and inside was this Heidi Swapp Marquee Love letter. I'd never heard of Heidi Swapp but some quick research told me she is a super famous scrapbooker.

Lucky for me my goody bag contained an L for Lucinda! Lucy has mentioned a couple of times that she'd like a night light like her sister's, so I decided to decorate it for her bedroom.

To decorate the L marquee letter, I used:
- A black polka dot sheet of scrapbooking paper - An exacto knife for paper cutting - Aqua coloured decorative washi paper - Two AAA batteries - Cutting mat

Inside the marquee letter kit is a traceable letter. I used this as a template to cut out the scrap booking paper.

Next I used the exacto knife to cut out the small holes for the lightbulbs. They don't have to be perfect, so long as the small bulbs can easily fit through.

Once the holes are cut, fit the scrapbooking paper into the letter. It should fit nice and firmly and stay in place.

To add some colour and detail to the outside of the letter, I used this decorative aqua washi tape. Run the tape carefully around the whole shape until covered as desired.

Next - time for the lights! Very Hollywood! Once the globes are clicked into place, the kit has very straightforward instructions on how to arrange the wiring in the back. Each LED light just clips simply into the back of the globe.

And voila! One night light for a very happy little girl. A very quick project - it only took me about 15 minutes!

There are unlimited ways you could decorate these letters - paint, glitter, different washi tapes, sticker embellishments, stamps. Dannielle from Style for A Happy Home went for a glitter paper marquee letter, you can check out her DIY here.
These would be really cool at a wedding (they have an ampersand symbol in the range too) or just as a fun decorative light feature at home. I also think they would be a really cute kit to give as a kid's birthday gift with a couple of extra art supplies for decorating.
For my many US readers *waves hello* - you guys can buy these Marquee Love letter kits at Michaels.
I was invited to attend Spotlight's launch of National Craft Month (Lucky me! Thanks Spotlight!) and this product was provided as a gift, but all other items used in this post were purchased by me. I will also be compensated for this blog post. I only partner with brands that I think are a great fit for the content on my blog and share projects that I think my readers would be interested in.
