My dear friend April Rhodes has done it again, she’s knocked it out of the ballpark with her newest pattern: The Popover Poncho! April began working on this pattern over a year ago… and I bugged her about it all last winter. But, you know, she’s a super busy lady with a family to take care of, fabric to design, and life to live.. so the PDF version of this pattern wasn’t released until the beginning of November this year. I had already bought fabric for this specific project when her pattern released, so I was way ahead of the game I have already worn my Popover Poncho many times, and am itching to make another, more subtle one so I can wear it even more.
((be sure to read to the end of the post for a fun surprise!))
The Popover Poncho is easy to sew and very beginner friendly. It comes in three convenient sizes: S/M, Large, and Plus to accommodate a wide variety of body shapes. I sewed to S/M poncho and made no adjustments to the size. It fits perfectly on me, so if you’re any larger than I am, I would recommend going up to the large. The poncho features a front pocket to easily hold your cell phone, keys, and other small items and a lined cowl neck. I used a rayon blend jersey knit for the cowl lining and fused it with apparel weight interfacing. I tried to first sew it without the interfacing, which was a disaster, but once I added the interfacing it sewed like a charm. The metal eyelets that April suggests using on the cowl for the drawstring really add a detailed touch that I really love. You, of course, could substitute with buttonholes. This striped fabric is a poly/acrylic blend that I picked up at a sewing expo from Vogue Fabrics. I fell in love with the colors and decided immediately that I needed to make the Popover Poncho. I love how it turned out.
My only complaint about this pattern is the length. Which is my normal complaint about most patterns seeing that I am on the taller side and my torso is long. Next time, I think I would add about 2″ to the bodice of the Popover Poncho.
