Encouraging your child to create their own desitiny

As a parent it is my responsibility to help to encourage my children to “reach for the stars” and to create their own destiny.

Things were a lot easier when my kids were little. Our daughter wanted to be a fashion designer ever since she was six years old. When she was around nine years old she came up with an idea for a fashion brand that would serve people of all sizes. She wanted to make the same clothing and styles available to everyone, no matter what your size. So a person who is a size 3X could wear the same nice outfit, blouse or pants as someone who is a size 2.

Our daughter is graduating in June and heading off to college in the fall. She has no clue what she wants to do with her life. She no longer wants to go into fashion design. I think she’s a bit put off by how competitive it can be. We always tell her if that is what she truly wants to do then she should go for it.

Right now she’s not sure what she wants to do. She’s tossing around ideas like becoming a teacher, physical therapist, lawyer or psychologist. She’s not sure what path in life she wants to head down… yet.

Our son really hasn’t figured out what his destiny is. He has a few more years of school left before he graduates. He has time but it’s still nice to have some idea of what you want to do with you life.

Currently he is thinking about a career in film. He’d love to attend the New York Film Academy in New York City, but its a very expensive school and I doubt we could afford it. We’re hoping there are more affordable option that have a film major.

I have a feeling is destiny will involve either film, photography or something to do with weather (he’s always been fascinated by weather, especially snow).

No matter what our kids decide to do with their lives we will always be there to support them and encourage them 100%.

Speaking of having the power to create your own destiny, there is a new special premiering on NetFlix about creating your own destiny. There are also two other original series premiering later on this month which also touch upon kids creating their own destiny.

Ever wonder what happened to the storybook characters we grew up with like the Mad Hatter, Snow White, and the Evil Queen? Turns out they are parents now too, and their children are studying at the enchanted high school of Ever After High, a boarding school for teens destined to follow in their famous parents’ fairytale footsteps. The all new original special Ever After High: Spring Unsprung, premiering Friday, celebrates the idea that the story of your life is not written in permanent ink. You have the power to create your own destiny.

In two other Netflix original series premiering this month, there are kids also creating their own destinies. Teenage mermaids stand out from the crowd in Season 2 of Mako Mermaids (2/13), and Richie Rich (2/20), the same entrepreneur we grew up with, is back but this time his refusal to eat his veggies has made him a trillionaire.

1. Ever After High (2/6)
2. Mako Mermaids (2/13)
3. Richie Rich (2/20)

Netflix has plenty of other great films and series for little kids up to ups “big kids” (adults) which can help encourage people to create their own path in life and to “go for it.”

One way to help keep you focused on your goals and what you’d like to achieve in life is to create a Vision Board. I actually created one a few years ago for myself. There is not specific way to make one. You can make one as simple or as elaborate as you want.

Visions Boards can be made by young children and by adults. Even adults can use a little inspiration.

I even took a course on Vision Boards years ago.

Here is a great example of a Vision Board you and your child could make – DIY “Create Your Own Destiny” Vision Board.

How do you encourage your child to seek out and fulfill their own destiny? Feel free to share your tips, suggestion nd advice. It could be helpful for others.
