Not exactly the triumphant return I expected…

So this happened yesterday!!

Welcome to my first run post op. It only took 14 weeks and one day. Not that I’m counting or anything…

I would love to tell y’all it was all sunshine and rainbows but really, it was not so much. These punk sesamoids are tough to heal. Some days I am absolutely positive they are on the mend, only to wake up the next day feeling like I took a few steps back. Will (my PT) assures me they are definitely much better so I just have to trust his expertise. He hasn’t failed me so far.

After a few exercises & adjustments, I stepped on the treadmill for my first run since November. A couple minutes in, the left foot started barking at me so Will pulled the plug on the run. I thought that was it for the day, but Will had another trick up his sleeve. He taped my foot and asked if I prefer to run on the treadmill or outside. Duh, outside!

So he sent his assistant & I on a wog (walk/jog) to the chocolate shop down the street for their famous salted caramel candy. They are seriously the best unlike this pic below.

We started out at about 25% effort then worked up to 50% so it was nice & easy. Plus it was 80 degrees which this beach bum now thinks it’s “hot”. Ha my family is probably laughing at me right now since I grew up with 100 degree summers.

The tape worked really well, though I still had some pain. On a scale from 1-10 it was like a 3-4 but it quickly went away as soon as I stopped to walk which I learned is actually a good thing.

This was not the triumphant return I expected since I was preoccupied with paying attention to body parts hurting or flying off so I didn’t allow myself to enjoy the moment. But all things considered it went well. The hip held up very nicely in fact, I would have never guessed surgery was 14 weeks ago if I didn’t know. It blows me away how well my recovery has gone.

Would it be bad if I woke up thinking about switching to cycling as my primary sport of choice? Yah, I totally did.
