So very soon…

So soon, these will be lemons. The kids look forward to this every year.

Every year it amazes me how they suddenly turn yellow – ready to be turned into lemonade. This tree was our very first attempt at any sort of garden. It is such an honor to watch a tree flower, then grow fruit until the branches are heavy.

There are times during the year when I wonder if we will see any flowers at all. I worry that the desert climate is too harsh. I worry that I neglected to water it too often.

I have the same worries with my little ones. I spend the evenings, focused on one child or the other, and I look up and worry that I didn’t give them all enough of me. I worry that I spent too long with one and didn’t give anything to the others.

Then, they surprise me. The bloom, they grow, and their fruit becomes beautiful.

They become beautiful in spite of the times that I’ve been terribly human. They become beautiful in spite of the fast food they’ve consumed instead of the home-cooked meal. They become beautiful in spite of the mornings I spend yelling up the stairs that we are late. They become beautiful in spite of the uniform that I forgot to wash.

I’m so very thankful for beauty, and lemons, and lots of sugar so that we can make that delicious lemonade.
