Embrace the NIVEA Sun Safe Code this summer

Sponsored by NIVEA Australia

Summer in Australia is all about the outdoors, the beach and the backyard pool.

It’s part of our lifestyle.

Hand in hand with that lifestyle is our need to enjoy our summers but but in a way that is safe for our skin.

The topic of daily application of sunscreen is not a new one here on Styling You. It’s my NUMBER ONE key beauty message.

I was lucky enough to have the habit of applying sunscreen instilled in me from a young age.

My late mum had the “no sunscreen, no swim” rule in place long before it became commonplace.

Just last week I was speaking to a young, female dermatologist. I shared with her my age. She was surprised to hear that I was 47.

I’m not usually one to boast but this is something I do boast about.

I know that the skin on my face would not look like it does had I not created the sunscreen habit from a young age.

It’s something I’m particularly passionate about. It’s never too late to start the habit. Your skin will thank you.

I’ve done a lot of work with NIVEA over the past couple of years and one of the reasons I continue to do so (this post included!) is that they understand our collective desire to enjoy the sun but give us the tools – effective sunscreens – to do so safely.

Did you know that NIVEA was the first company worldwide to register the first sunscreen with UV filters? That was back in 1933 and they’ve been at the forefront of sunscreen development ever since.

According to NIVEA skin care expert Ken Lee, SPF is all about time protected – not strength – of sunscreen.

SPF is based on the length of time you’re naturally protected from sunburn and that time frame varies from skin to skin.

He says if you have fair skin like me you might start turning red within three minutes without sun protection. An SPF 30 sunscreen will protect you for 30 times more than those three minutes, so 90 minutes; an SPF 50 , 150 minutes.

I burn easily and also wear a minimum of SPF 30. I’ll choose SPF 50 if I know I’m going to be out and about. I choose broad-spectrum sunscreens to protect against UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays contribute to ageing in our skin; UVB rays cause our skin to burn.

If I’m in water or sweating then I reapply sunscreen at least every two hours. I’m also super vigilant about seeking shade, wearing clothes that cover up, a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses – particularly when outdoors in summer between the hours of 10am and 3pm when the sun is at its most powerful.

My “wardrobe” of NIVEA sunscreens covers (pun intended!) all my – and my family’s – lifestyle needs. Here’s what sunscreen we use and why:

1. NIVEA Sun Moisturising Sunscreen Lotion SPF50 (RRP $17.99): I need a lightweight everyday sunscreen that I can apply on my skin without fear of icky-ness and sticking to my clothes.

2. NIVEA Sun Ultra Sport Protect Quick Dry SPF50 (RRP $17.99): We play sport or exercise and need a spray-on sunscreen that cools our skin while still protecting while we sweat.

3. NIVEA Sun Ultra Beach Protect Quick Dry SPF50 (RRP $17.99): We enjoy our pool and going to the beach and need a spray-on sunscreen we can quickly and easily re-apply for a quick-dry effect.

4. NIVEA Sun Kids Caring Roll On Sun Lotion SPF 50 (RRP $10.99): The youngest needs a sunscreen he can apply himself (and take to school) – it’s my way of passing on the habit my mum passed on to me. I also like this one for use on my face at the beach or by the pool.

At the start of each summer, I also go through our collection of sunscreens and swap out any opened bottles or sprays for new versions. I’m usually good with where they are stored (a cool, dry place) but I err on the side of caution rather than find out the hard way – by burning – that they have lost their effectiveness.

The NIVEA Sun Safe Code with the theme of Take Care Out There and Give Care Out There has been created so that you can have fun this summer knowing you’re protected from the Australian sun. I’d love you to share it with your friends.

I’d also love you to GIVE CARE by joining the NIVEA Sun Resolution by sharing this new Thomas Leveritt video.

Remember Thomas’ first video that showed how the sun sees your skin and how it changes when you wear sunscreen?

He’s captured that again …

How powerful is that?

Remember … always read the label and use only as directed.

So tell me, do you have a sun protection or sunscreen question you’d like answered? Leave it below and I’ll source the answers for you if I don’t immediately have them.
