Now We Know How Much Makeup Is Just Right

A new study by The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology sought to define the perfect amount of makeup as viewed by both men and women. The results are surprising!

The researchers took 44 women and provided them with a variety of makeup to choose from. The women were asked to put on the amount of makeup they would normally wear if they were headed for a night out. The researchers took photos of the women both before and after they applied the makeup. With these photos they created 21 separate images of the women, beginning with the makeup free picture and gradually increasing the amount of makeup until the final, full face picture.

Next the researchers asked 44 people, 22 men and 22 women, to flip through the pictures and chose how much makeup was the perfect amount. Believe it or not, the men preferred women with 30% less makeup than the models actually applied. The women preferred slightly more makeup, but overall the result indicated that the women in the study were wearing more makeup than people felt they needed.

Before the study they polled all of the participants and both men and women believed that men would prefer more makeup than women did, another surprise! So the lesson for the day is to lighten up on the makeup. You can use it to enhance your features but piling on the products is definitely not needed.
