{DIY} Paper Mâché‎ Ring

Remember when I decided to make a necklace out of paper beads? It just wasn’t enough. I love the look it creates when you stack the paper together. This ring was created like any basic paper mâché project, using wheat paste.

If you have a severe allergy to wheat, you are going to want to skip this DIY. I’m lucky and handling wheat doesn’t bother me but I know there are plenty of celiacs that should stay away from anything with wheat, even if they aren’t ingesting it.

To make a paper mâché ring, you will need:

  • A Cricut Mini or other Cricut cutting device
  • Cardstock (multiples colors)
  • Ring template (Something has gone amiss and I can’t link up the download. Leave me a comment and I will email you the pattern.)
  • All Purpose flour
  • Water
  • A brush
  • Wax or parchment paper

Before you get started putting things together, you need to download the ring template and use your Cricut to cut it out. You can see how I do this in my paper bead necklace tutorial. If you don’t have a Cricut and want to try this year, you’ll need to create your own template and use a xacto knife and a cutting mat. If you want me to send you a template so you don’t have to create your own, just let me know in the comments.

Next, whip up a small batch of wheat paste. I used a small batch of this recipe. I also recommend rolling out some wax or parchment paper to work on.

Start by putting down one ring, brush a THIN layer of wheat paste over it (you can’t even see it on mine). Then set another ring on top of it.

Keep repeating that until you get to the thickness you like. It will start getting messy. Use the brush to remove excess wheat paste and let it try for at least 24 hours.

Voila all done! I left mine as is. But, if you are looking for a more professional look you can file or sand it to smooth out the edges or spray it with lacquer to give it a shiny finish and protect it.

Fun fact time, mâché is French for chewed up paper. Gross, no? Or so wikipedia claims. Anything else I should attempt to make out of paper? What do you think?
