Easy DIY Temporary Tattoos

I’m just a few weeks away from turning 27, but I still love a good temporary tattoo. It’s pretty rare that I pass by one of those quarter machines at store exits without picking up one of those sparkly unicorns or dragons or whatever. I know they’re so cheesy and kind of pointless (especially since I have actual tattoos, hah) but I think they’re so fun. And there’s actually a super easy way to make your own. I think they’d make really fun joke gifts or party favors for friends (Galentine’s Day, anyone?).

DIY temporary tattoos – what you need:

  • plain white paper
  • gel pen
  • scissors
  • plastic zip bag (optional)
  • water and paper towel

Step 1: Draw your design(s)

This is where you get to be really creative. Think about some of the things you or your friends really love and doodle them on your paper. If you want to get really involved, you might print out some designs and trace them with the pen.

Step 2: Cut out each tattoo and package them for gifts

Then it’s time to package them for gift-giving. If you’re just using them yourself then you don’t really need to worry about this step. However, if it’s just for personal use you’re probably better off just writing directly on your skin. Just a thought. Anyway, cut out each tattoo and place them in those little plastic bags (like the ones used for jewelry pieces). Alternatively, you might offer each of your friends a whole sheet of tattoo options. In that case, you could just cut the paper to fit in a normal sized ziplock bag. Then they can just cut out each tattoo when they decide to use them.

Step 3: Apply

When everyone has their fun tattoo designs, cut out each one and decide where you want them to go. The application process is basically the same as other temporary tattoos. Take a wet cloth or paper towel and press it to the back of the paper over the area you want it applied. However, you might want to hold it on a little longer (up to 1 minute) and possibly even apply some water directly to the tattoo before pressing it on with the cloth. And try to hold it really still while applying, because they get kind of messy. But hey, they’re temporary tattoos, so we’re not going to be that picky, right?
