Rikky Walsh For The Wilder Instagram

Say goodbye to the lovely JinJoo and hello to Rikky Walsh who will be taking over the Wilder Instagram. Rikky is not only a photographer, but a horticulturist too. Double trouble.

1. What is you favorite flower?
The Passion flower. It’s so unreal! Both geometric and organic at the same time.

2. What is your favorite vegetable?
The tomato. For something that originated in Mexico it’s amazing to think about it being such a crucial part to so many different types of cuisine, even though it’s really a fruit.

3. What is your favorite season and why?
Hands down the fall. Cool days and cool nights make me nostalgic. I grew up in Florida so any reason to wear a sweater was a big deal. I also love how nature is winding down. Although its a epilogue to the summer, it’s a really early introduction to what we can expect in the spring.

4. Organic, heirloom or don’t care.
Heirloom. I’m a huge fan of history and food anthropologie. Knowing the history of a fruit or vegetable heightens your senses making you appreciate exactly what it is.

5. What do you grow?
I grow all sorts of things of things for other people, mostly of the ornamental variety. Unfortunately I don’t have an outdoor space of my own but if I did I would definitely grow vegetables. It provides a complete gardening experience.

6. What is your favorite terrain. Mountains, dessert, beach, plains.
I grew up in an area of Florida that is wedged on this small strip of land between the ocean and the marsh. So my favorite terrain would have to be that weird pine/beach landscape. This “Forrest” that only grows in Florida is called a hammock. It’s the perfect combination of pines, oaks and palms all butted right up against the ocean.

7. What is the scariest thing in nature?
I think the scariest thing in nature is its unpredictability. As much as we think we have control of it it’s going to beat us every time.

8. What is the most impressive thing in nature?
The most impressive thing in nature is its ability to heal its self. Even after it has been abused it seems to have a way of repairing itself and bouncing back. I have always been a believer that once humans are gone nature will take over and reign supreme.

9. What sounds do you like to fall asleep to?
It depends on the season, currently I love falling asleep to the sound of my AC rattling in the window. Besides the cool air it provides, the soothing quite hum relieves me from the heat of the day. Out of the city silence is golden.

10. If you could change one thing about humanity’s relationship with nature, what would it be?
To respect nature and realize it is here to coexist, and shouldn’t be taken advantage.

11. What is your spirits animal?
Flying fish, always on the move but constantly above water.

12. What is the best and worst part of living where you live?
I live in New York City, so the best part is that I get to experience every season…The worst part is that I am experience it in here and not where the seasons are embraced and glorified.

13. If you could be the first to explore a place, where would it have been? Why?
I would love to have been a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition. They were setting off into uncharted territory. Seeing the prairie full of buffalo and high grass must have been so humbling, and only to cross it and hit the Rocky Mountains… What a punch in the stomach!

14. When are you happiest in nature.
Always! Although the ocean wins, It’s calming and life affirming and at the same time challenges you with the changing tides and waves crashing all around you.…
