Underground Female MC's Better Than Your Favourite Rapper (Part 1)

The mainstream music industry will have you believe that there are only one or two female rappers worthy of your attention. But that's far from true. Here are some underground female MC's with more flow and lyricism than your favourite rapper.

Sa Roc:

Hailing from southeast Washington DC, Sa-Roc is known for her conscious lyrics and masterful flow.

Not one for the superficial, she spits on topics ranging from otherworldly metaphysical concepts to afrikan consciousness.

Sa-Roc recently released a new mixtape called The Legend of Black Moses. Listen to her talk about the inspiration behind the project in the video below.

Jean Grae:

Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, by way of Cape-Town, South Africa, Jean Grae has a deep musical lineage. She's the daughter of South African jazz musicians, Sathima Sea Benjamin and Abdullah Ibrahim.

Born Tsidi Ibrahim, she started her career as "What? What?" in the mid 1990s but changed that to her current Xmen themed moniker in the early 2000s.

She's since released numerous EP's and albums that feature impressive lyricism and sophisticated story telling. Check out her latest, "Kill Screen" below:

Junglepussy:

Fearless with a f*ck you attitude. That's the best way to describe Junglepussy. Born Shayna McHale to Trinidadian and Jamaican parents in East New York, she start rapping after a string of other jobs that- in her own words- "just didn't work out"

Thank goodness they didn't.

With cheekbones that could cut glass, she spits bars that need no filter. Raw rhymes delivered with a side of ox-tails.

Listen to "Nah" the single off her debut project, Satisfaction Guaranteed and you'll get the reference.

Rapsody:
' North Carolina born Raspsody names MC Lyte as of her biggest rap inflences and it shows.

“Lyte showed me that women could do this and be just as good as the guys,” she says,

She builds on that path that those female rap veterans have laid down with fluid rhymes delivered with the unbothered bravado of a woman who knows exactly what she's doing.

Listen to Godzilla off he Beauty and The Best EP to see what I mean.

FM Supreme:

Born and bred in Chicago, FM Supreme's art is a combination of lyricism and activism. She describes herself as a "humanitarian rap artist" and it's not hard to see why. Some of most powerful lyrics illustrate the struggles of the disenfranchised who are trying to survive in spite of the violence that surrounds them.

With the delivery reminiscent of a rap veteran FM Supreme shows that you can spit uplifting rhymes and still be an artist to watch.

Look out for Part 2 next Friday. What do you think of the list? Is there an female MC that you think should be included. Let me know their names in the comments below.
